Springtime! And this (ahem) young man’s thoughts turn to… baseball.

After watching my team lose yet another Superbowl to the team/QB/coach who clearly have their number, it’s time to return focus on my other team, who have rolled over and died each postseason of the past several, 2009 being the sole exception.

But THIS IS THE YEAR!!!

Well, it might be, actually. The Yankees made some minor moves here and there (no major free agent signings, in other words), but improved their starting rotation & assuming the bats stay healthy… well, they could improve on the 97 games they won last year. Other teams like the Angels and Marlins made some very nice moves, and I also think the loss of talent from the Cards and Brewers will alter the NL Central somewhat.

So here they are – the Wagstaff predictions for baseball 2012:

AL East: Yankees
AL Central: Tigers
AL West: Angels
Al Wild Cards: Rangers, Red Sox

NL East: Phillies
NL Central: Reds
NL West: Diamondbacks

NL Wild Cards: Marlins, Giants

Beyond that, it’s whoever gets hot in late September. My only other prediction is that the Pirates will have their first winning season in a long long time, maybe 82-83 wins or thereabouts.

And the Dodgers? Well, I’d put them in the #3 spot for a wild card considering how well they played the second half last year, and how positive the atmosphere must be over there since the ownership change. But I think a healthy Giants team can eke it out just over them in the end. I’m not sure what to think of this new wild card structure – supposedly it will make winning the division much more important & eliminate the slacking off we’ve seen from some clinching teams the past few seasons. I have to see it play out before I can really analyze it.

So here’s to baseball & to HDTV broadcasts all season long.
