End Of An Era October 19, 2007

There’s only one other manager in Yankee history to win more games than Joe Torre, and he had Ruth, Gehrig and DiMaggio.

Gee, firing him looks bad, so let’s make him a concrete offer that he’ll find insulting, and then it’ll be him that decides to leave! Yeah, that’ll work!

Yeah, yeah, I thought he overused the middle relief and played too much of the “I’ll bring this guy in to pitch to one batter since my closer ALWAYS pitches the ninth” school of push-button managing, but he brought the Yankees to the post-season EVERY YEAR HE MANAGED, despite injuries, washouts like Kevin Brown and Carl Pavano, and having the pressure of Steinbrenner’s impossible “win the World Series or else” sword of Damocles over his head on a daily basis.

Not the manner to part ways. Not at all.

Now to sit back and see if the Exodus happens…. Posada, Abreu, Rivera, A-Rod….

It’s going to be an active and interesting off-season, to be sure.
