Wagstaff’s Playoff Picks I – Plus Nearly All Bowl Results January 3, 2008

With only my pick of LSU to cover 4 1/2 over Ohio State in Monday’s title game to go, I can tally up the rest of my college bowl picks for a 6-4 record, coming out ahead a whopping $10. Who cares about money, I say! Isn’t it all about glory? Alabama, Missouri, USC, West Virginia, Georgia & Kansas all came through for me while Boise State, Boston College, Maryland and Florida State fell short.
Some games were certainly more entertaining than others, and I’m being reminded again and again how Fox should never be allowed to cover sports. It’s not enough for them to plug their stupid prime time crap every minute and a half, now we get to have ads for crap movies laid over the bottom third of the screen during replays and then used over the wipes editing us back to the action. Then we get endless pregame shows and drawn out worthless bullshit during halftime to drag a game with a supposed kickoff of 5:15pm Pacific to nearly a 10pm finish (in the case of the Sugar Bowl). I thought it was awful enough to endure the endless blatherings of Tim McCarver during every Fox baseball broadcast and to put up with the nonstop promos for Fox’s latest exercise in this-piece-of-drek-will-be-cancelled-in-three-weeks during their football games, but they reached a new low in their college bowl broadcasts, and I’m sure the BCS Title game coming up Monday will be another exercise in Fox’s relentless long march towards nonstop ads and promos running in a split screen aside the game itself.
End of rant! Time for those sure-fire NFL playoff picks for Round 1!
I’ll go with Seattle to defeat Washington, covering the 3 1/2 points. Seattle is just a better team.
Jacksonville to cover 3 over Pittsburgh (though I’d much rather have the Patriots get Pittsburgh next week)
Upset special: I’ll go with New York plus 3 points over Tampa Bay, who I think had a much easier schedule and won mostly against weaker teams. Despite Eli Manning’s tendency to crack under pressure, especially late in the game, I think the Giants feel rough and ready after playing the Patriots well last week, and will come into this one with momentum that will carry.
And finally, I’ll get fancy and say that Tennessee will beat the 10 point spread against San Diego, but lose the game. I’d rather they win it, but since that’s what I’d be betting, all I need are the points! HaHa!
And was it me, or did every play on the above pictured Tudor Electric Football wind up with every player vibrating towards the sidelines? Though as far as Tudors go, running to the sidelines might have been a good move for Lady Jane Grey. Blimey, that wasn’t very sporting of Bloody Mary, eh guv’nor?
